Bottom freezer gets too frosty, frig too warm; defrost fixes this temporarily. What are the likely causes?

At http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/questions/218466-kenmore-elite-mdl-76259702-cooling-problems, Scott D. had answered a similar question in 2010. On January 31, 2012, I followed the defrost procedure, and the unit, a bit under two year old Kenmore Elite Model #596.76253702 was fine for a few weeks, as measured by a thermometer placed inside. Then some frost started to come back into the freezer. I turned the freezer setting warmer from 4 to 3, and the frig got too warm. I turned the frig setting colder from 4 to 5. The frig went to c.48f; the freezer below -20f. Turning both settings back to 4 stabilized the frig at 43f. I did another defrost on Feb. 16 to try and get it back, and it is stable again for the moment. Any thoughts? We thought the whole problem started (with a warm upper section) because we had too many bags filling the top of the unit, but there must be something wrong to cause the frost buildup. In Scott's answer referenced above, he doesn't say what might be wrong if the frost buildup happens again, as it did. Any suggestions? Is there a specific problem with this model? Is this owner serviceable?

I understand how important it is to have all of your appliances working properly, especially the refrigerator. It sounds like the problem is not the defrost, but possibility the controls. At the recommended setting the refrigerator temp should be at 37 and 0. This should only increase or decrease within a 10 degree range. Below I have include images on how to troubleshooting the control board. This will help you determine what the problem is. If you need further assistance, please reply to this thread. Thank you for using Manage My Life.

Anne, Thank you very much for your reply. Unfortunately, the resolution of the scans you sent makes parts of them unreadable when expanded to a decent size, either printed or on screen. Is it possible to get something more legible, either on line or via snail mail? If the latter, please let me know how to contact you so I can send my address. Additional info. The ice maker was never hooked up. I was told to keep the handle up, which we have. Should it also be unplugged from the back wall of the freezer compartment? After 6 days, I am starting to see frost again on the top lip of the freezer drawer. I understand that when the vents in the back get iced again, I'll need to once again do a manual defrost - unplugged overnight, and would like to get this diagnosed soon. Since my post on Feb. 16, I noticed on your site these references to others with my model having similar problems: http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/questions/281177-freezer-frost Scott D suggested using 'Forced Defrost Mode' in his answer here. http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/questions/245807-two-year-kenmore-elite-refrigerator-model-59676253702-getting-cold Korinna S suggested the manual defrost here. Is there a common problem here?

This is a great place to go for advice, especially if you're low on funds and you could resolve the problem before calling and paying a service call, if it's an easy fix. I'm glad you are there for me.
